The National Ombudsman back on Bonaire: More consultation hours due to increased interest.
During the first week of September 2024, Bonaire had the privilege of welcoming the National Ombudsman once again for four half-days of consultation hours. After the overwhelming interest in his previous visit, an additional half-day session had now been added to the program. This time, residents of the island could visit not three, but four times, at different locations, to share their questions and complaints.
Growing interest.
Last time the National Ombudsman was on Bonaire, the interest proved enormous. Many residents took the opportunity to express their concerns about the government and its services. This resulted in the organization of these consultation hours deciding to schedule an extra half-day session. This shows not only the need for the presence of the National Ombudsman, but also the confidence residents have in this important function.
Accessible support.
The consultation hours were open to anyone who felt dissatisfied with interacting with government agencies, such as the police, the Public Prosecutor’s Office or the public body. Residents had the opportunity to ask their questions in several languages, including Dutch, Papiamentu, Spanish and English, so that everyone could make themselves understood. This made the consultation hours more accessible to Bonaire’s diverse community.
Personal attention.
The atmosphere during the consultation hours was warm and welcoming, and it was an honor to once again serve as hostess. Residents had the opportunity to share their stories in a relaxed environment. The National Ombudsman and his team were well prepared and listened attentively to visitors’ concerns. This personal contact is crucial because it not only helps solve individual problems, but also helps build trust in the government.
